Biblical Selection - "PAPERWHITE NARCISSUS" This sweet-scented flower is popular for winter bloom and is the flower of the month for December. Susan painted paperwhites with their many small-crowned white flowers and green leaves, surrounded by the quotation from Isaiah, lettered in green, and a green border.
"The desert shall rejoice and blossom... It shall blossom abundantly,
and rejoice even with joy and singing."
There has been considerable debate about the identity of the flowers in the Bible. The Hebrew and King James versions translate Isaiah 35: 1-2, "the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose," and the Douay version translates it "lily." James Moffatt, a British scholar, translated the Bible, consulting botanists about the appropriate flowers of the Bible; he identified the flower in Isaiah 35:1-2 as narcissus. Botanists agree that paperwhite narcissus, Narcissus tazetta alba grew abundantly on the plains of Sharon, and the variation N. papyraceus grew in the Mediterranean region and north.
