Anniversary, Wedding, Romance Selections - "AUTUMN CROCUS: GROWING OLD"
Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, The last of life, for which the first was made: Our times are in His hand Who saith "A whole I planned, Youth shows but half; trust God: see all, nor be afraid! Robert Browning
The flower painted here, Colchicum autumnale, is actually a member of the lily family. The leaves appear in early spring and usually die down by June. The blooms emerge in August and September, thus giving rise to its meaning in the language of flowers, growing old.
Robert Browning (1812-1889) is best known for the strength and optimism of his Victorian-age poetry. For this poem, “Rabbi Ben Ezra,” Susan chose the autumn crocus to illustrate the young spring leaves setting the stage for the spectacular autumn blossoms.
